1968 M8A McLaren

The M8A McLaren was the 1968 weapon for the CANAM series. Bruce McLaren and Denny Hulme would dominate in 1968 with the M8A.

I'm looking to paint Denny's M8A of 1968 at Riverside. Now armed with reference materials, books, photos etc, the composition is developed, and a rough sketch done, an impression of the infamous Riverside, turn 7.

This M8A is the car the Bruce McLaren Trust are restoring in Auckland today and will soon be ready for the track again.

As you can see, sometimes I do digress from the sketch. I didn't like the perspective with the trailing car, everything looked too congested. The composition is in a continual state of flux, as more and more ideas come to mind, the basic elements are there though.

As you see, I have removed the trailing car, the painting looks a lot better, in my view. I will give it more thought. I'll concentrate on Denny and Bruce, while thinking about what to do about the fourth car?

Drawing the car further in the distant, gives the painting greater depth.

At long last I'm back and the painting is progressing steadily.

The painting is very close to completion. What are your thoughts?
